Do you know what a wetland is? This field experience will give you firsthand
information about Rocky Mountain National Park wetlands. Wetlands are the link between land and water. They
are transition zones where the flow of water, nutrients and the sun's energy create a unique ecosystem identified
by hydrology, soils and vegetation. This seminar will give participants the opportunity to explore the physical
and biological factors that create a wetland. The wetlands that we will study are in the Big Thompson, Fall River
and St. Vrain watersheds and include fens, wet meadows, riparian habitat and marshes. Plants and hydrology will
be emphasized and, where practical, soil will be identified. We will discuss functions and values such as flood
control, fish and wildlife habitat, aesthetics and biological productivity. During field investigations, we will have
the opportunity to discuss various impacts on wetlands including drought and global climate change.
